Like Bonnie and Clyde, I had been on the run, not from the law but from God. You see, God had called me and in fear I ran. I was running on the path that leads to an ambush on some back woods road, where death did surely wait. I had been running so hard and so fast and so long, that the soles of my shoes crumbled with the weight of each step; my feet chafed from the roughness of the asphalt beneath them. Despite the discomfort, I walked on many more miles until my feet became calloused and hardened from the constant abusive of impact. And still I walked on, until my soles could bear no more. Then my walk became a crawl. When I could no longer crawl, I looked up and grace shone down. And God in all his mercy and goodness welcomed this prodigal home. Instantaneously, my crawl went into a full on sprint toward the call and purpose for which I had been commissioned.
I, Jonah. I run.
I, Jonah. I run no longer away from my Nineveh.
I, Jonah. I run toward my Nineveh.
My Nineveh. I come to you in the name of the Lord, to preach not against you, but to proclaim the good news about Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God.
My Nineveh. Repent, believe and be saved, post haste, for the Kingdom of God is near!
My Nineveh. Do not worry about your appearance. Don’t wait until you “get it all together.” As the hymnal Just As I Am says:
“Just as I am, Thou wilt receive
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve
Because Thy promise I believe
O Lamb of God, I come, I come”
My Nineveh. I cry out!
My Nineveh, “Come!”
My Nineveh, “Come!”
I, Jonah. I Run!
